You suck at social media….

  • Shenequa Foster

I used to be just like you, until I learned social media and how to use it to my advantage.

The issue with social media is that people are focusing on the wrong metrics. They focus on likes, comments, and going viral…

Something that you can’t control.

You can’t control the amount of likes, shares, or if the content goes viral or not. Only the people can.

But you know what you can control, your reach.

How far your content can cross around the digital space.

You can control the amount of content you publish to be pushed into the “algorithm”.

You can get a gist of the content your audience would like based of data.

Those are the things you CAN control, and that should be your focus.

But you can't, your lost and don't know what to do because you're unclear.

Ask yourself a few questions......

What kind of content do you want to create? Or are you overthinking it, being a perfectionist, and barely putting anything out?

One thing we all know about social media is that it takes consistency and showing up every single day. I don’t care if people tell you otherwise. A lot of people will tell you, “You don’t have to post every day.” They’re lying, OK? Even the top companies in the world post every single day. So, I don’t know why they keep telling you that. It’s like they’re giving you advice after they’ve already built an audience that’s actively looking for them.

If no one is looking for you, you need to post every day until you build a following. Once people start paying attention, they’ll notice whether you post or not. But Anywho, that’s enough of my tangent. Here are the reasons why you suck at social media and how to fix it:

Reason #1: You’re overthinking it.

Stop overthinking it. Just create and post content. You have to create and post because you don’t know what works for you yet, and you won’t find out until you consistently do it. You can’t get good at something if you’re not practicing. Your first reel, your first graphic, your first informational post—it’s not going to be your best. It might take 1,000 tries just to figure out your flow, your style, and the kind of content that works for you. So stop overthinking it and just post something.

Quit worrying about whether people will like it or not. You don’t know, and honestly, you can’t control that. All you can do is hope for the best. So let’s not focus on what people might think or feel about your content. Post what you feel is right, based on what you want to share.

Reason #2: You’re not using data.

You’re probably posting content that’s not even for your audience. For example, maybe you’re creating content for women over 30, but your audience is mostly 19 to 25. Or you’re posting things that aren’t relevant to your industry, hoping to draw attention, but your audience doesn’t care. That’s just the truth. If your content isn’t resonating, it’s because you’re not using the data you already have.

How to fix it:

  1. Stop overthinking and post consistently. The only way you’ll figure out what works for you is by experimenting and doing it repeatedly.

  2. Create content that’s easy and simple for you to make. The easier it is for you to create, the more fun social media becomes.

  3. Use your data. Look at everything you’ve got—your email campaigns, your CRM, your social media dashboard. All the information you need is right there.

Once you start doing these three things and figure out how to create content that works for you, you’ll be able to batch and schedule posts. But I’m not going to overwhelm you with that right now—that’s a topic for the next article.

Anywho, if you like reading stuff like this, if you enjoy me getting on your ass—because apparently people like that—make sure you follow, like, and share.
